Choosing between sterling silver and gold vermeil isn't just about colour — it's about how a piece will look, feel and wear over the years. Both are gorgeous, both are made to last with a little care, and both are used across our personalised pieces here at Lumière & Co. Here's what actually sets them apart, so you can pick with confidence.
What Is Sterling Silver?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with other metals (usually copper) for strength — that's where the term "925 silver" comes from. It has a cool, bright white-silver tone that suits almost any skin tone and pairs beautifully with diamonds, birthstones and other silver pieces you might already own. All of our sterling silver jewellery is rhodium plated for extra shine and tarnish resistance.
What Is 14K Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil (pronounced "ver-may") is real gold — in our case 14K — bonded over a solid 925 sterling silver base. To legally be called vermeil, the gold layer has to be thicker than standard gold plating, which is exactly why it has a richer colour and a longer-lasting finish. Underneath that warm gold layer, though, it's the very same sterling silver structure you'll find in our silver pieces.
Key Differences to Consider
Look & Tone
Sterling silver gives you a cool, contemporary shine — think clean lines and a modern edge. Gold vermeil leans warmer and softer, closer to the glow of solid gold, and tends to suit warmer skin tones especially well. Neither is "better" — it really comes down to which tone you reach for most in your existing jewellery box.
Durability & Everyday Care
Because vermeil is a plated finish, it can wear thinner over time with heavy daily use, especially if it comes into regular contact with perfume, chlorine or salt water. Sterling silver is solid all the way through, so any surface tarnish can simply be polished away without affecting the piece underneath. With both, the same simple rule applies: put jewellery on last, take it off first, and store it somewhere dry.
Price
Because it requires an additional layer of real gold over the silver base, gold vermeil typically costs a little more than sterling silver in the same design. It's a lovely way to get the look of solid gold at a far more accessible price point.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose sterling silver if you want a cool, versatile tone that's easy to mix and match, or if the piece will be worn daily and you'd rather not think twice about it. Choose 14K gold vermeil if you love a warmer, golden glow and don't mind giving it a little extra care to keep it looking its best for years to come.
